The German government has taken the controversial step of approving COSCO Shipping Ports Limited’s (CSPL) acquisition of a less than 25% in HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) at the Port of Hamburg.
The decision comes after an investment review required for the acquisition of shares by non-EU companies, during which multiple governmental departments raised security concerns according to Reuters.
Within Germany’s coalition government, Greens and Free Democrats (FDP) strongly opposed the deal, with FDP general secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai claiming that allowing the Chinese Communist Party to have access to “critical infrastructure” would not be in Germany’s national interest.
