Many of the world’s largest importers and exporters are insufficiently informed about the full implications of the forthcoming new emissions regulations and the related added costs, Drewry has stated.
Pressure to decarbonise and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has grown in all sectors with many targets being set, such as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s target to reduce GHG emissions in shipping by 50% by 2050 (from a 2008 baseline).
These targets will be complemented by regional and national regulations and, as shipping transitions to engines powered by low or zero carbon fuels, Drewry expects to see an enormous technological change in the design of ships and their propulsion systems.
