A four-month pilot in which a software company used behavioural science to reduce carbon emissions on board Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement Deutschland (BSMD) managed ships has saved 13,900 metric tonnes of CO2 and over US$3m in fuel costs.
The trial saw Signol deliver carbon-saving targets to 30 Masters and Chief Engineers across 23 BSMD-managed vessels.
Calculated on the seafarer’s prior performance from analysis of operational data, the company provided personal milestones and achievements via its app and direct emails, nudging participants toward fuel efficient behaviours and letting them review their voyages.
