The total climate footprint from production to combustion should be considered in the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) for maritime, according to a group of organisations including the World Shipping Council and Danish Shipping.
In an open letter to the EU’s decision makers, the signatories emphasise the importance of looking at the climate impact of the new green fuels from extraction at the source to combustion.
Assessing fuels on a life-cycle basis includes the impact on the climate from producing, transporting and combusting the fuels.
