The International Transport Forum (ITF), part of the OECD, has recommended a global carbon pricing scheme for shipping to accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
In its newest report called ‘Carbon Pricing in Shipping’, the ITF calls for such a scheme to combine elements of the five different carbon pricing proposals put forward to the IMO, while accompanied by regulatory instruments such as technical design requirements for ships and a low-emission fuel standard.
These five proposals include levies, a “feebate” system, an emission trading system for shipping, a reward/penalty system and a maritime fuel standard.
