Argentina’s General Administration of Ports (AGP) and the Naval Hydrography Service have begun the bathymetric project to measure the water depth in the section where the Magdalena Channel will be deepened.

The Argentinian government has stated its intention to issue an international tender for the dredging of the Magdalena Channel to provide better access for ships entering or leaving the Río de La Plata and the Paraná–Paraguay waterway.

Currently, ships heading for the Río de la Plata have to pass along the Punta Indio channel, closer to Uruguay’s largest port Montevideo.
