Researchers from Pusan National University (PNU) have built a numerical algorithm to study continuous ice-breaking, aiming to help ice-breaking ships function more effectively while sailing through Arctic shipping routes.
The expansion of arctic shipping routes is a controversial decision within the industry as some shipping lines, including MSC, have committed to not sailing there.
In April 2021, MSC CEO Soren Toft stated that the decision to avoid considering the Northern Sea route was an “obvious” one for the company, adding that MSC would not seek to cut through the melting ice of the Arctic to find a new route for commercial shipping.
