Malta Freeport Terminals has signed a landmark agreement with the Malta government to carry out its first terminal expansion in two decades which will bolster its capability handle the world’s largest container ships.
The project will extend the north quay at the Freeport’s Terminal Two by 176 m and the west quay by 195 m, ensuring that the facility will be able to handle the new and future mega containerships of 23,000 teu capacity.
Alex Montebello, Malta Freeports CEO, said: “The Terminal Two extension – which requires an investment of €89m (US$98m) and will take two years to complete – will consolidate our reputation as a leading transhipment hub in the Mediterranean.”
