Port of Helsinki’s CEO, Ville Haapasaari, stressed the importance of maintaining Finland’s road and rail infrastructure as the Russia-Ukraine war has deteriorated the country’s logistical accessibility and made it more dependent on maritime transport.
Russia’s borders meet Finland on its eastern side and, since the war, aircraft have been unable to fly over Russia and almost the entire eastern border has been closed.
Haapasaari said: “Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that we have both freight and passenger transport connections to the world. And the government also has to invest in them.”
