DP World is investing £12m (US$15m) in eight new straddle carriers from Kalmar to service the new fourth berth at London Gateway, following three years of trials.
The machines will be part of the first all-electric fleet in the world to go into commercial operation at a port.
According to the operator, each unit will reduce carbon emissions by 54% compared to non-electric models, a figure that could increase over time as the terminal transitions its electric supply to zero carbon sources.
