The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a revised strategy to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping “by or around 2050”, marking an improvement on previous goals but falling short of Paris agreement-aligned ambitions according to green groups.
Adopted at the 80th meeting of the UN’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships includes an enhanced common ambition to reach net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping “close to 2050”, as well as a commitment to ensure near-zero GHG fuels by 2030.
In 2018, IMO members had agreed to reduce GHG emissions by 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.
