The Port of Barcelona recorded a fall of 11% in container traffic for the first half of the year, down to 1.6m teu due to the current economic climate in Spain and Europe, as well as a decline in transhipment containers.
Overall cargo handling across all segments also fell by the same percentage to 32.5m tonnes and liquid bulk decreased by 16%.
José Alberto Carbonell, the port’s general manager said: “These figures are the result of the current economic situation and match the state of affairs in the remaining the ports of Spain and the continent.”
