The International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada has negotiated another tentative agreement with the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), subject to the approval of employers and union members, following the latter’s rejection of the previous agreement three days ago.
While acknowledging the proposed wage increase and signing bonus payment, ILWU Canada’s voting membership rejected the proposed four-year agreement based largely on concerns over the process of contracting out maintenance work.
Rob Ashton, president of ILWU Canada, claimed that the process represented a significant threat to job security, and instead called for provisions that limit or regulate the extent of maintenance work that can be contracted out.
