Construction has started on the US$140m Phase II expansion of APM Terminals (APMT) Lazaro Cardenas to increase the capacity of the first semi-automated facility in Latin America by an extra 1m teu and aims to position it as a hub for the Americas.
Expected to be completed in Q1 2026, the expansion will increase the yard area by 15.7 ha and the terminal will be able to handle an annual capacity throughput of 2.2m teu.
The new phase includes new equipment to enhance port capacity, including six automated rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes, 14 new shuttle carriers and four empty handlers.
