Hapag-Lloyd has now installed 700,000 tracking devices on its container fleet, putting the company on course to having the largest smart container fleet in the world once it fully equips all 1.6m dry containers.
This installation was personally completed at the company’s headquarters in Hamburg by Dr Volker Wissing, Germany’s federal minister of digital and transport.
The solar battery-powered tracking devices, equipped with internal sensors and GPS, transmit data through the cell network, as well as recording shock events and ambient temperature.
