A 41% reduction in rainfall during October has led the Panama Canal to cut the number of daily reservation slots available, as it looks to navigate the drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), the lack of rainfall has seen the Gatun Lake reach unprecedented low levels for this time of year, reducing water availability.
The ACP noted: “With less than two months left until the end of the rainy season, the Canal and the country face the challenge of the upcoming dry season with a minimum water reserve that must guarantee supply for more than 50% of the population and, at the same time, maintain the operations of the interoceanic waterway.”
