Both new container terminals at the Port of Colombo have selected ABB to provide technology for crane automation, in an effort to deliver high efficiency operations at the Indian Ocean transhipment hub.
The facilities have opted for radically different terminal layouts, with East Container Terminal (ECT) set to utilise ‘perpendicular automation’ whereas West Container Terminal (WCT) will feature ‘parallel automation’.
ECT, developed by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), will expand port capacity to around 14m teu and when it is operational by the second quarter of 2024.
