The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly has unanimously approved the Council’s decision to appoint Panama’s Arsenio Dominguez Velasco as the next secretary-general, taking up the role on January 1 for a four-year term.
He is the current director of the IMO’s marine environment division and will become the 10th elected secretary-general, replacing Kitack Lim in the position.
Addressing the Assembly, Dominguez Velasco said: “You have my full commitment to build on the great work that has been done by my predecessors, taking what is already a significant and influential organisation, to be an institution that will thrive in delivering its full agenda, from safety to decarbonisation, from digitalisation to the human element.
