The Port of Long Beach has unveiled a fleet of 33 zero-emission, battery-powered yard tractors, which is the largest deployment of its kind on the US West Coast, as part of the complete phase out of diesel-powered models.
The deployment was led by SSA Terminals, a joint venture between SSA Marine and Matson Navigation Company, and will increase the amount of zero-emission equipment being used at the port to about 20%.
The machines, which are manually operated, will also help to accelerate Pier C’s progress towards zero-emissions operations and will continue as SSA Terminals works to integrate more models.
