The recent disruption to shipping in the Red Sea is expected to contribute to a decrease of 1.25m tonnes in throughput in December at the Port of Rotterdam, compared to the total throughput in 2022 of 467m tonnes.
Vessels have been rerouted away from the Suez Canal to travel around the Cape of Good Hope due to attacks by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels in response to the war in Gaza.
Voyages for container ships have been extended by eight to 12 days, as the shipping distance from Singapore to Rotterdam through the Suez Canal is over 15,000 km but the route via the Cape of Good Hope is more than 20,000 km.
