SAAM, through its tugboat division SAAM Towage, and Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP) have signed a service agreement that will make Chile the first country in Latin America to have an electric, emission-free maritime tugboat, which is expected to be operational within the next 18 months.
The vessel will operate in Puerto Chacabuco, one of the world’s southernmost terminals, and provide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-free berthing and unberthing vessels, with the aim of significantly reducing environmental and underwater noise.
Julio Friedmann, ENAP CEO, said: “Implementing this new technology in our processes supports our company’s goal of being more sustainable every day and advancing towards decarbonisation.
