CMA CGM has taken delivery of the CMA CGM Mermaid, the first in a series of 10 container ships of 2,000 teu capacity that will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be deployed in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The new ships are designed with the aim of improving their energy efficiency and environmental performance, emitting up to 20% less CO2 compared to a similar-sized ship with a conventional maritime fuel design, such as very low sulfur oil.
The vessels will join the carrier’s fleet of about 620 ships, including 30 already powered by alternative fuels, and are part of a fleet renewal programme worth US$15bn with the objective of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
