A study carried out by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), in partnership with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), has concluded that financial constraints and low technology readiness are the main factors preventing further progress in decarbonisation at US ports.
The Port Decarbonization Survey asked 27 ports and two terminal operators to name the three biggest hurdles to decarbonisation and the most common answers was the financial constraint (90%), low technology readiness (62%) and equipment performance constraints (45%).
The study identified that the challenges for the industry are that the transmission lines and charging infrastructure are being built at too slow a pace, public funding is far too low to achieve the decarbonisation goals and technologies are not yet developed enough to allow one for one replacement of traditionally powered equipment.
