The UK government has announced an £8m (US$10m) fund for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in shipping, aiming to kickstart feasibility studies to develop smart shipping technologies such as AI, robotics, and autonomous vessels.
Winning projects that receive a portion of the Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund will also require match funding from the private sector.
Successful ports will be able to use AI to detect safety hazards, optimise port activities and reduce their environmental footprint.
