APM Terminals (APMT) Elizabeth has progressed its US$5m electrification pilot project by replacing seven diesel terminal tractors with new Mafi T 230e electric terminal tractors (eTTs) due to a US$1.4m Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The electric vehicles, which will contribute to yard, rail and vessel operations, support plug-in and wireless charging and offer zero direct emissions, as well as reduced noise pollution.
The terminal initiated the pilot project in collaboration with sustainability experts from the Leonardo Academy, a non-profit organisation that helps others develop sustainable, high impact transportation practices.
