Port Houston has seen its container volumes in May increase by 21% to 364,866 teu compared to this time last year with a total 1.76m teu moved through its two container terminals from January to May, representing a rise of 14%.
Robust construction of new warehouses and distribution centres over the past two years and regional consumer spending on items like furniture, hardware and retail goods have driven loaded import volumes this month to an 18% increase.
Strong manufacturing in Texas has pushed loaded exports, which rose by 21% to 131,690 teu this month and by 15% this year-to-date to 655,116 teu.
