The Port of Rotterdam has recorded a 2% increase in container volumes to 6.8m teu in the first six months of this year as a direct result of greater demand for consumer goods and an earlier peak season due to importers ordering products earlier due to longer sailing times and fluctuating schedules.
Ships have not passed through the Suez Canal since late 2023 due to the Red Sea crisis and there are challenges with finding sufficient vessel capacity because of the longer sailing times.
Changes in sailing schedules, increased demand and bad weather in Asia have caused congestion at ports in Asia, the Middle East and southern Europe but congestion in northwestern Europe has so far been limited.
