NYK Line, in collaboration with IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd and Nippin Kyokai (ClassNK) has deployed the world’s first ammonia-fuelled tugboat.
The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the Sakigake vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over a three-month demonstration period.
It was developed as part of the Green Innovation Fund Project, initiated in October 2021, which falls under Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to develop vessels equipped with domestically produced ammonia-fuelled engines.
