DP World has announced a £1bn (US$1.3bn) expansion of London Gateway to make the facility the largest container port in Britain within five years in a boost to volume and resilience of international trade.
The operator will increase capacity by building two new berths, taking the total to six to be able to receive the world’s largest ships, and London Gateway will add a second rail terminal to handle the expected increase in containerised trade.
By the end of the decade, the full quayside of more than 2.5 km will be able to simultaneously receive six vessels, each more than 400 m long, and have Europe’s tallest quay cranes.
