Canada’s labour minister Steve MacKinnon has proposed the appointment of a special mediator for a 90-day period to help negotiations between the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) and CUPE Longshoremen’s Union, Local 375 regarding the strike at the Port of Montreal.
On X, MacKinnon stated: “During this time, there would be no strike or lock-out. Parties have until end of day Friday to accept or reject this offer.”
Talks between both parties are deadlocked over disputes about wages and the strike has affected the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which handle approximately 40% of the port’s container traffic.
