Transnet has issued a statement rejecting concerns expressed by the United National Transport Union (UNTU) regarding the efficiency and capacity of critical equipment of its Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) operations.
The union claimed on November 15 that it had firsthand knowledge that Transport Management purchased seven rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to help address backlogs but only five worked on arrival from Los Angeles.
It is alleged that during South African minister of transport Barbara Creecy’s visit to the Port of Cape Town, management highlighted various challenges, such as adverse weather conditions and critical equipment breakdowns, leading to delays and congestions but did not reveal some of these issues are self-inflicted, according to the union.
