Marine NGO Seas At Risk has criticised the International Maritime Organization (IMO) over the “failure” of IMO member states to uphold the minimum target as part of its greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy set two years ago as the IMO concluded the 83rd session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee.
According to Seas At Risk, the IMO’s first benchmark to cut emissions by 20% by 2030 “looks increasingly out of reach”.
During MEPC 83 the IMO established a legally binding framework to reduce GHG emissions from ships globally to help achieve its aim for net-zero emissions by, or around, 2050.
