The Mediterranean Sea has officially become an Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (Med Sox ECA) under MARPOL Annex VI, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) stated.
For ships operating in the area, the sulphur content in fuel oil ships is now limited to 0.1% in order to significantly reduce air pollution and deliver major benefits both to human health and the marine environment.
Ships operating in emission control areas for sulphur oxides and particulate matter are subject to strict mandatory measures to precent, reduce and control air pollution.
