They will include a straddle carrier positioning system, along with laser scanning boom and gantry ultrasonic anti-collision systems. The machines will also be fitted with cameras covering the span and backreach area, cargo area and the boom operation; images will be displayed on monitors in the driver’s cabin, the machinery house, the operator’s cabin and the landside gantry station.

In addition to the waterside outreach, the cranes will have a landside backreach of 22.9 m, a 66-tonne safe working load (SWL) and lift height of 42.67m under twin lift spreader. Hoist speeds will be 70-175m/min, trolley speed 245m/min and crane travel speed of 45 m/min. The crane will be fitted with Liebherr AC drives.

Maher Container Terminal at Port Elizabeth is North America’s largest container terminal with a capacity for 2m lifts a year. The addition of the Liebherr Megamax cranes, which will bring to eight the number of STS machines supplied by the manufacturer to the New York/New Jersey ports since 2001, will substantially increase the capacity of the terminal.
