China asks Iran to rein in Houthi attacks in Red Sea

Shipping lines continue divert with no end to the Red Sea crisis in sight

Chinese officials have asked Iran to help rein in attacks on ships in the Red Sea by the Houthis, or risk harming business relations with Beijing, according to Reuters.

The attacks on commercial ships have raised costs associated with shipping and insurance and disrupted the Suez Canal, which is a key trade route to Europe for Chinese vessels.

China did not make any specific comments or threats about how the trading relationship could be affected if its interests were damaged by Houthi attacks, Reuters’ Iranian sources said.
