Maritime security is a shared responsibility, says IMO Secretary-General

Arsenio Dominguez addressing the UN Security Council

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Secretary-General has called for vigilance and a deeper cooperation among member states and international partners to address growing threats to global maritime security.

Arsenio Dominguez, IMO’s Secretary-General, outlined the risks facing ships and seafarers as they transport billions of tonnes of goods worldwide, during a high-level open debate at the United Nation’s (UN) Security Council on August 11.

“Our collective response must be rooted in prevention, constant vigilance, innovation, and continuously strengthened regional and international cooperation,” he said. “Multilateralism is key here. Maritime security is a shared responsibility.”
