The onshore power supply (OPS) system at Port of Barcelona’s BEST terminal has supplied energy to more than 30 ships in its first year of pilot operations allowing them to stop their engines while berthed.
Last year, MSC Mette marked the first ship to connect to the OPS where it was supplied with 100% renewable energy and able to cut its engines, thus generating no emissions.
Following this initial operation, the first time something of this nature had been carried out in a Mediterranean port, the OPS system has facilitated the reduction of 2,310 tonnes of CO2 from ship emissions.
