French container line CMA CGM has introduced a dedicated block-train intermodal solution in Mexico, expanding its inland connectivity from key seaports to major industrial hubs. The service—incorporating weekly departures and guaranteed capacity—links CMA CGM’s maritime network with inland rail corridors, responding to bottlenecks in road transport and rising demand for reliable long-haul logistics within Mexico.
Intermodal Context: Rail’s Rising Role
Rail transport remains a relatively small but rapidly developing segment of Mexico’s logistics network. In March 2025, freight rail concessions moved 81,598 containers, equivalent to 0.82 million tonnes, with Ferromex and Kansas City Southern de México accounting for nearly 97% of activity.
Despite rail’s modest modal share (just over 13% of domestic cargo movement in 2023, with trucks moving 57%), intermodal solutions are gaining traction as shippers seek alternatives to road congestion and high operating costs.
