The US’s Port of Long Beach will invest US$5.3m in green-energy equipment for two of its terminals as part of transition to zero-emission operations.

The grant was provided by the California Air Resources Board and will see two battery-electric top-handlers go into use at SSA Marine’s Pacific Container Terminal and one fuel cell yard tractor, one battery-electric top handler and one battery-electric yard tractor go into use at Long Beach Container Terminal.

Lou Anne Bynum, harbour commission president at the Port of Long Beach, said: “The progress we’ve made in reducing pollution is a model for seaports everywhere, with diesel emissions alone down almost 90 percent since we adopted the Clean Air Action Plan in 2005. Still, we are not satisfied. This equipment will further contribute to a cleaner environment for our neighbouring communities.”
