Hapag-Lloyd has signed a contract with Chinese shipyard CIMC Raffles for the construction of eight new dual-fuel 4,500 teu methanol container ships.
The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, and the investment volume amounts to more than US$500m.
The new ships will be up to 30% more efficient than older generations of ships in the same size class and will be able to save up to 350,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year when using methanol propulsion.
