CM article: Cargill Launches First Green Methanol Dual-Fuel Dry Bulk Vessel

Cargill has put its first green methanol dual-fuel dry bulk vessel, Brave Pioneer, into service, signalling that alternative fuel adoption is spreading beyond container shipping into the traditionally conservative bulk sector.

The 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax vessel, built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding at its Cebu yard and owned by Mitsui & Co., departed the Philippines on 15 January for Singapore, where it will bunker green methanol before proceeding to Western Australia and Europe. The move positions Cargill—which charters around 640 vessels daily across dry bulk and tanker trades—as a first-mover in methanol-fuelled bulk shipping.

Brave Pioneer is the first of five green methanol vessels Cargill has chartered, with the remainder scheduled for delivery over coming years. Mitsui ordered two vessels in 2023, while J. Lauritzen’s NexGen Shipping division is building three additional Kamsarmax bulkers for Cargill charter, with deliveries from late 2026.
