Samsung to build OOCL mega-container vessels

Samsung Heavy Industries has received a second order in one month to build 21,100 teu-class container ships; this time from OOCL in Hong Kong, which has ordered six vessels at a cost of US$950m, with an option for a further six.

In March, the shipbuilder received an order from Japan-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) for four similar vessels.

At 400 m long and 58.8 m wide, the OOCL vessels have a similar specification to the 20,100 teu-class ships previously ordered; however, the new vessels will be able to accommodate another layer of containers and will also be equipped with a number of energy-saving systems.  They are to be delivered by November 2017.
