Maersk will introduce the first of eight 16,000 teu capacity container vessels capable of being operated on carbon neutral methanol from the first quarter of 2024, as the carrier looks to decarbonise its fleet.
The ships will replace older vessels, generating annual CO2 emissions savings of around 1m tonnes while offering customers carbon neutral ocean transport at scale in an industry first.
The vessels will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and the agreement features an option to add four more vessels in 2025.
