Port of Rotterdam Authority, ProRail and Swietelsky Rail Benelux have given the go-ahead for construction of the Maasvlakte Zuid Railway Yard (EMZ).
The first phase of the project involves various construction of the initial bundle of six sidings suitable for 740 m trains and various connections to existing rail infrastructure and will be commissioned in mid-2027.
By enabling larger trains than the current standard length of 600 m, the EMZ is able to increase the number of containers transported in a single trip and reduce train movements, lower emissions and reduce costs per tonne of freight.
