CM article: Port Newark Accelerates Hybrid Fleet Rollout with Konecranes Noell

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) is expanding its hybrid fleet, placing a second major order from Konecranes Noell in 12 months, signalling that incremental electrification remains the practical path for US East Coast terminals seeking emissions cuts without compromising operational uptime.

The New Jersey terminal has ordered 20 hybrid straddle carriers in Q4 2025, scheduled for delivery in Q4 2026. This follows 15 hybrid units ordered in Q4 2024, which are currently being delivered. PNCT first introduced hybrid straddle carriers in July 2022 and has standardised on Konecranes Noell across its fleet, with more than 200 units ordered over the years. The terminal currently operates 124 straddle carriers.

Each hybrid unit combines a diesel genset with a rechargeable battery, cutting fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining full operational performance. PNCT deploys the carriers across ship-to-shore, stacking, truck, and rail operations.
