The MPA crane will be used at Searport’s two piers, one for dry cargo and one for liquid cargo, with bulk material handling being the machine’s main tasks. The crane is equipped with two winches for mechanical four rope grab operation. With a maximum lifting capacity of 144 tonnes, it will also be used for handling heavy lift cargo, such as windmill components.
At Gloucester Terminals, which specialises in steel, containers, forest products, project cargo and heavy lift, the crane will be used for general cargo and container handling. The LHM 550 is backed up by an existing LHM 400 which started operation in Gloucester in January 2011.
Since entering the North American market, Liebherr has seen an upwards trend in orders, supplying 32 machines for customers in the United States and eight in Canada. It has also established a local service network.
