MIT expansion opens for business

The latest expansion phase at MIT, which cost US$100m, includes a 400 m container berth, a landing ramp and a ro-ro berth for vessels up to 300 m, together with a pavement area of 17 acres. It also includes the purchase and delivery of six new gantry cranes (including three super post-Panamax) and container handling equipment, including RTGs, yard hustlers, and top- and side-loaders.

In addition, the administration building has been completely refurbished to incorporate state-of-the-art ICT systems for both internal and external data exchange. As a result of the improvements, the terminal’s annual handling capacity has been increased from 1.5m teu to 2.2m teu.

“We are proud of these new facilities, the product of local investment, which will further help consolidate Panama’s position as the most important logistics centre in the area. This expansion reinforces Panama’s importance as the second largest port operation in all of Latin America,” said Secretary Peters.
