DP World opts for Siemens ECO-RTG drives

This is the second recent order from DP World for Siemens crane drive systems, following an order for six ECO-RTGs from the operator’s Djibouti terminal at the end of 2007. According to Siemens, operational data from container terminals using RTGs equipped with the hybrid ECO-RTG drive system show a fuel saving of 50% or more compared with conventional RTG drive systems, while maintaining the same levels of productivity.

The hybrid drive system’s variable speed gen-set results in a considerable reduction in diesel fuel consumption. A key component is its patented diesel engine management system, which keeps energy conversions within the system to a minimum. The hybrid drives used in the ECO-RTG are specially developed for heavy mobile equipment powered by a diesel-electric system.

As fuel prices increase worldwide, the need for fuel savings increases as well. The environment benefits from lower exhaust gas emissions and reduced noise, while container terminal operations benefit from lower fuel costs.”
