With diesel-powered RTGs becoming more expensive to run because of fuel costs, more operators are looking for alternative power supplies and Conductix-Wampfler has developed the E-RTGTM system that enables the conversion from diesel to electric power by two methods based on motor cable reels and conductor bars.
RTGs need to be unplugged and re-plugged when switching container aisles but conversion to E-RTGTM with the new Drive-In solution makes this unnecessary. Instead of manually replugging into the current collector trolley of the conductor bar system, the collector trolley is automatically steered to guide rails and onto conductor bars when the RTG crane enters the aisle saving time and energy while increasing efficiency and reducing the terminal’s environmental impact.
Conductix-Wampfler has begun the electrification of 32 container aisles at China’s Shekou Container Terminal (SCT). “With the electrification of the RTGs, we want to satisfy our responsibility to the environment,” said David Wan, SCT’s deputy general manager & COO. Moreover, with SCT regularly experiencing high a solution was sought that would not only save energy and reduce CO2, but would also operate without risk use to personnel. And taking into account the operating noise levels of diesel powered stacking cranes, electrification offers advantages that are impossible to ignore and we are therefore proud to be able to play a leading role in the introduction of this groundbreaking new technology,” said Wan.
