Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) has announced the arrival of two new quay cranes worth HK$78m (US$10m), which are the country’s first to be equipped with solar panels on top of machinery house.

The photovoltaic system consists of 84 solar panels and the energy collected will be used to power auxiliary systems, including air conditioning and lighting systems in the quay cranes.

With an estimated three hours of exposure to sunlight every day, the system will be able to generate about 42,000 Wh of energy with a 98.75% system efficiency.
